Colt courts cloud disties for white-label service

Alex Scroxton

Infrastructure provider Colt is on the hunt for distribution partners or cloud aggregators to carry its recently launched Enterprise Cloud, a VMware vCloud datacentre service launched over the summer.

Speaking at VMworld in Copenhagen, the firm's executive vice president of infrastructure services, Mark Leonard, said the firm was hoping to help smaller resellers push the cloud into SMB environments, which VMware believes will become a major opportunity.

"We're familiar with that proposition in the telco world and have a network of resellers in [that] space who have been white-labelling for a number of years," Leonard reasoned, "and we now realise that the same model will hold true in the cloud space."

He added: "We're looking to make vCloud datacentre services available through distribution so that they can network that out through the market."

The role of distributors in the cloud environment remains, by-and-large, up for debate, with many, such as Computerlinks, eager to embrace the technology even though questions remain over how well such services will fit with the distribution business model.

Roger Sowerbutts, vice president of northern Europe at Comparex (formerly Germany-based reseller PC-ware) said: "We see an important role for distribution in the cloud. In emerging areas they will have the skills that resellers may not."
