Softcat boss Hellawell on look-out for cheap furniture

Alex Scroxton

Softcat managing director Martin Hellawell has secured use of a Transit van and volunteered to "buy everything we need in the Ikea sale" as the firm lines up an office move in the near future.

The fast-expanding reseller has burst the seams of its Marlow base and has now announced the purchase of a nearby facility that it reckons is 50% larger than its current home.

"I wouldn't say it's at all easy at the moment [but] business remains strong and we intend to keep growing and recruiting," said Hellawell.

"When it comes to a working environment, people are far more important than buildings, but I hope we can use our new home to continually improve Softcat as a workplace for our employees," he said.

The company will clearly be looking into some kind of bulk buying arrangement for office furniture; it now employs 400 people in the UK across sites in Buckinghamshire, London and Manchester, and hopes to add another 160 this financial year.
