Citrix aims for SMBs with VDI-in-a-Box, posts Q3 results

Citrix is making a concerted effort to boost its presence in the SMB market with the launch of  VDI-in-a-Box 5, an all-in-one virtual desktop aimed at smaller businesses, allied to a new channel partner SMB Specialist accreditation.

VDI-in-a-Box is based on technology from the acquisition of Kaviza in May this year. Citrix claims the all-in-one architecture underpinning VDI-in-a-Box eliminates over 60% of VDI costs.

The vendor has also announced a solution combining VDI-in-a-Box with a cloud-based support offering, Citrix GoToManage, to help managed service providers remotely monitor and support virtual desktop deployments.

The SMB Specialist specialisation, which is part of the Citrix Solution Adviser Programme, gives partners access to sales tools, free online training and pre-sales support. Citrix said certification would begin in January.

Citrix EMEA vice president for channels, sales programmes and strategy, Carsten Thomsen said VDI-in-a-Box was a "great opportunity" for distribution managed partners to gain access to a product that suited their market with an integrated approach that removed the complexity associated with desktop virtualisation.

Citrix vice president for marketing and business development, SMB Solutions, Krishna Subramanian, said SMEs seeking the benefits of desktop virtualisation had been "underserved by existing solutions. Together with our partners, Citrix is breaking down the barriers for smaller organisations wanting to realise the business agility and efficiency of virtual desktops."

Meanwhile, the vendor has reported a 20% increase in Q3 revenue to $565m and an increase of just under 5% in net income to $92m. Deferred revenue increased by nearly 23% to $834m, while revenue from technical services was up 37%, online services grew 20% and product licences increased 28%.
