Oracle has bulked up its cloud-based CRM offering after swallowing up cloud customer service specialist RightNow Technologies for $43.00 per share, or $1.5bn net of cash and debt.
RightNow specialises in linking up customer service activities through call centres, the web and social networks.
The acquisition is Oracle's largest since it bought Sun Microsystems in 2010, and will form a key plank in Oracle's Public Cloud, according to Oracle development executive VP Thomas Kurian, and could be taken as another shot across Salesforce's bows.
"Oracle is moving aggressively to offer customers a full range of cloud solutions including sales force automation, human resources, talent management, social networking, databases and Java," said Kurian.
The deal is expected to close by the beginning of 2012.
