European tech M&A spending stable

Simon Quicke

Things remain stable on the technology mergers and acquisitions front across Europe although there were only a couple of $1bn plus deals in the last month.

The latest figures from M&A watcher Regent Partners indicate that the number of deals dropped slightly compared to September and fewer mega deals hot the overall total deal value but according to a three month average it was described as "a fairly stable picture".

The two $1bn deals were the purchase by Sony by Sony Ericsson for £876m and Permira's acquisition of Genesys, the call centre software arm of Alcatel-Lucent, for $1.5bn, which took the money spent last month to a total of $9.4bn.

Regent highlighted the growing speculation that Microsoft or Google might buy Yahoo as evidence that it could be a busy end to the year.
