Storage resellers need to prepare now for big data surge

The channel needs to prepare now if it aims to take advantage of the spread of the opportunities created by big data.

A recent report from Ovum revealed that the demand for big data solutions is spreading and the role for the channel is growing but those at the coalface in the storage world have highlighted the need for resellers to make investment.

Ovum found that 44% of businesses are planning to invest in projects to deal with big data challenges and these were beyond the traditional media and broadcasting verticals.

"The growing trend will provide invaluable growth opportunities for the channel which must prepare now in order to ride the crest of the wave.," said Alistair Washbourn, channel marketing manager EMEA at Quantum.

"In the interim, resellers and VARs will need to invest in getting staff members up to speed and find solutions that will not only meet customer needs but also provide sufficient return on investment.," he added.

In a recent blog post Tony Baer, Ovum analyst and author of the report on big data, said that it expected the amount of data in enterprise warehouses to grow by 10 to 20% in the next year.

"The need for the technology crosses industry boundaries, with use ranging from classic customer segmentation analyses, to customer churn prevention, managing smart utility grids, public transportation networks, to anti-terrorism initiatives," he wrote.

Enterprises would be spending to help manage this area but the analyst house also found that 38% of those it quizzed were looking after data warehouses in the terabyte range running operations with revenues below $50m.
