Consumerisation and social driving software growth

The European software industry can expect modest growth this year as consumerisation and social media force firms to open up budgets to enable secure remote working.

The latest forecasts from IDC reveal expectations of a 3.1% increase in growth across Europe this year with consumerisation as one trigger for spending along with a raft of product enhancements from vendors also tapping into the need for more social functions in applications.

"New versions of salesforce automation and customer service applications will feature new social capabilities such as discussion forums, activity sttrream, follow or subscribe capability, external feeds, alerts, and so on," said Bo Lykkegaard, program manager, European enterprise applications at IDC.

Along with the social side the other pressure on enterprises is to accommodate the growing demand for personal devices to be used at work and consumerisation is going to lead to a need to upgrade existing systems.

IDC expects spending on mobile device and application management tools to increase this year as the bring your own device trend spreads across more customers.
