A lax attitude towards security certificates, even after high profile data leaks, is leaving customers open to potentially dangerous and costly breaches.

The lack of an automated process in the majority of users means that human error and ignorance over the state of SSL and digital certificates is an accident waiting to happen, according to research from Venafi.

Its survey of users revealed that 72% had no automated process to keep track of certificates and 76% expected the number they needed to keep an eye on the grow this year.

Just shy of half (44%) admitted that they handled the management of certificates manually leaving them open to human error.

"Organisations protect mission-critical and often regulated data with hundreds or thousands of encryption keys and digital certificates," said Jeff Hudson, CEO at Venafi .

"Too many companies have inaccurate or incomplete data about their security assets. The unquantified and unmanaged risks these certificates and keys pose is significant," he added.
