Launch of iPad 3 will add to IT department headaches

The potential launch tomorrow of the iPad 3 is a prospect that is not likely to be greeted with smiles from those IT managers already struggling to cope with the consumerisation wave battering their networks.

The iPad has been a product, along with smart phones, that has fueled the demand for staff to bring their own products into the workplace and the next generation of the tablet, with a faster processor and better quality screen, is expected to add to the momentum.

According to a survey from communication services specialist Star a fifth of IT professionals said that consumerisation was having a negative impact on their role.

Most identified coping with meeting demand from staff for innovation as their biggest challenge and and a quarter said there were issues aligning the IT department and the wider business.

Paul Watson, interim CEO of Star, said that there was a difference in opinions over consumerisation between the IT department and staff.

"IT professionals see consumerisation as a bad thing while everybody else thinks exactly the opposite and that is causing further frustration for business leaders, who are now wondering where they can go for the next innovation cycle?" he said.

"Employees across company departments are the ones now driving change by bringing the latest technologies and gadgets into the workplace, something that could be seen as an opportunity and often is by everyone except the people in IT," he added.
