Public sector opportunities continue despite cuts

The public sector showed surprising signs of life in the last quarter as the need to cut budgets translated into spending on technology.

Since the current government started its deficit reduction programme of cuts the public sector has been a place for the channel to be wary of with the amount of money available coming under severe strain.

But according to the latest overview of the market from Pearlfinders, which monitors trends and opinions in the IT world, the public sector bounced back in Q2 after a couple of years of decline with a 3.4% increase in spending on IT.

"Perversely, this can be attributed to ongoing pressure on budgets. Local authorities are looking at breaking down outsourcing agreements into more flexible contracts with multiple suppliers," stated the latest Pearlfinders IT Index.

Already public sector networks have emerged to coordinate the purchase of technology services across various different local authority groups in a move designed to save even more money.

Pearlfinders highlighted several areas where public sector customers are buying with opportunities for those in the channel with unified communications skills and those able to help with the bring your own device transition.
