Westcon may be open to Symantec reconciliation

Networking and security distributor Westcon has hinted it is open to expanding its vendor portfolio in the UK following its acquisition yesterday of Spanish security VAD Afina, which may include a possible revival of its discontinued Symantec contract.

The two companies parted ways in the UK back in 2009 after a three-year affair.

The purchase of Afina chiefly expands Westcon’s presence in Spain and Portugal, Latin America and North Africa, according to CEO Dean Douglas, but also adds a handful of new vendors to its line card, including Symantec, while also strengthening its capabilities around names such as Riverbed and VMware. Note that it does not currently distribute Riverbed in the UK either.

In a statement sent to MicroScope this afternoon, Westcon Security European vice president Willem de Haan said the distie was exploring its options in the wake of the acquisition.

"It is our intent to leverage whatever makes sense between both companies. Westcon Group believes in a limited focused portfolio consisting of strong partnerships based on mutual commitment,” he said.

“The future will tell which Westcon or former Afina vendors share our potential desire to increase collaboration,” added de Haan.

Westcon Security’s current UK portfolio consists of 4sureIT, Blue Coat, Check Point, Crossbeam, F5, Great Bay, HP, Juniper, Dell SonicWALL, Skybox and Vasco.
