Melbourne gives iomart Manchester base

Cloud hosting specialist iomart Group has acquired Manchester-based hosting firm Melbourne Server Hosting, giving it a physical presence in north-west England for the first time.

The Scottish cloud force, which announced its acquisition this morning, will add two datacentres and a disaster recovery facility to its arsenal as a result of the purchase, taking its total number of sites to seven.

Iomart CEO Angus McSween said the firm had been sniffing around the area for some time in the hope of developing its regional presence.

“The fact that it [Melbourne] already has a great reputation in the region and owns and manages its own datacentres offered the perfect path for us to enter a very competitive regional market for hosting,” he explained.

Thirty-strong Melbourne, which was set up in 2000, specialises in physical server hosting first and foremost, and claims to have around 600 customers on its books, including cosmetics and chemical firm PZ Cussons and troubled retail chain JJB Sports.

Founder and CEO Daniel Keighron-Foster said: “I believe that Melbourne’s great local reputation and iomart’s established status as one of the UK’s leading hosting providers will be a powerful combination.”
