McAfee labels Potter star Watson the most dangerous

Celebrities, particularly female ones, are the most popular way for cyber criminals to get clicks onto their malicious code with the public prone to let their guard down on the promise of a bit of gossip.

According to McAfee, which ranks celebrities in terms of how dangerous they are by because of their popularity in being used for attacks, the Harry Potter film star Emma Watson is this year's name that deserves to be treated with caution.

Watson was followed by Jessica Biel, Eva Mendes and Selena Gomez with Halle Berry completing the top five most dangerous celebrities.

“In today’s celebrity culture, consumers expect to be able to go online to catch up with the latest photos, videos, tweets, and stories about their favorite celebrities. Due to the richness of the data and the high interaction, often times consumers forget the risks that they are taking by clicking on the links,” said Paula Greve, director of web security research at McAfee.

“As the sophistication and expectations of consumers with respect to their online experience has increased, so has the level and ability to deliver malware either by malvertising, exploiting the user’s browser without their awareness, or masking malicious URLs behind shortened URLs," she added.

This is the sixth year that the anti virus specialist has put together the dangerous celebrities list with last year's top position going to the model Heidi Klum.
