Cisco has confirmed that the initial roll-out of its Unified Computing System (UCS) will not be available to partners through distribution, but has insisted that this is normal practice for major new technology releases.
A Cisco spokesperson said: "Currently UCS is not available through distribution in the first phase; this is a standard approach for selling new technology, for example telepresence."
Cisco confirmed the UCS product lines would be opened up to its UK distributors, which currently comprise C2000's Azlan division, Westcon Group-owned Comstor, and Ingram Micro, once "accreditations, knowledge and skills have been built up".
One source in the Cisco distribution channel said that at this stage there was no clear indication of when Cisco would open up UCS, but added: "We are very keen; data centres are a key strand and we will certainly come knocking on their door."
Speaking to MicroScope earlier in the week at the launch of UCS, Cisco UK datacentre boss Jim DeHaven said Cisco was evaluating a core group of Gold Partners with datacentre specialisations for the initial launch of the new solution.
Cisco expects this initial group, thought to number about 10 partners, along with any future entrants, to demonstrate additional competencies around Cisco's UCS software partners, such as Microsoft and VMware.
One reseller who declined to be named claimed that Cisco's sales policy around UCS seemed somewhat confused, but expected things to become clearer soon.
Partners have largely rallied around the new architecture, launched Monday. Tom Kelly, UK managing director at Logicalis - widely expected to be heavily involved in marketing UCS - said: "We believe their networking leadership will translate and resonate in a market actively seeking an integrated approach; Economic events are compelling CIO's to tackle the complexity and cost inherent in enterprise data centres today."
