Ingram Micro EMEA president Forbes set to leave

Ingram Micro has handed the reins for its EMEA operation to Alain Maquet following the resignation of current incumbent Jay Forbes.

The distributor is in the midst of a cost cutting restructure in the US and EMEA, though Forbes said he is leaving the organisation for personal reasons and plans to return with his family to his native Canada at the end of this month.

Maquet, who joined Ingram in 1993 as the managing director of France, has been the head of Ingram's Latin American business since 2005. This region has also endured its fair share of pain and saw sales fall 5% to $455m in fiscal Q4 ended 3 January.

"Returning to Europe as president is an exciting step for me professionally," said Maquet in a statement, "I'm looking forward to addressing the new challenges in my native region and working with my European colleagues again."

Alain Monie, president and chief operating officer at Ingram, said Forbes had streamlined the regional HQ, strengthened "lagging operations and re-balanced our portfolio mix in favour of higher-margin accounts."

In the final quarter of fiscal 2009, the wholesaler saw revenues in EMEA fall 21% to $2.95bn. It plans to drive through a cost reduction programmes on both sides of the Atlantic, reducing its workforce by 8% to save $20m annually.

"Despite significant weakness in the European market, solid progress was made in controlling costs and the region is poised for greater success as the economy improves," added Monie.

Greg Spierkel, CEO at Ingram, told investors at the Global Technology Distribution Council event in London yesterday that the distributor does not expect a significant rebound till 2010 or even 2011.

Forbes said the previous two years in the role were "some of the most rewarding and challenging times of my career" but added "my family and I decided this was the right time for this transition".
