Best Buy eyeing up 30 store launch plan

US retailer Best Buy is sizing up options to open 30 stores in the UK as part of its plans to launch into the British market next year.

The company had originally been expected to arrive on UK shores this summer but the recession has forced it to revise its timetable and wait until conditions improve.

In an interview with the Observer the retailer's chief executive of international operations Bob Willett outlined the plans to kick off a launch of stores and web site next spring.

He said that more of its products, including its Rocketfish computer accessories brand would be stocked in Carphone Warehouse, which it has a 50% stake in.

He added that with the majority of sales coming via the web there was not a requirement for hundreds of stores but over the rest of this year it would increase the flow of products through Carphone Warehouse.

When it announced plans to postpone its UK launch Best Buy indicated that one of the benefits of the delay and the recession would be its ability to find better sites at lower prices.
