Oracle faces EU to argue for Sun merger

Simon Quicke

The ongoing saga of the EU and its investigation into the Oracle and Sun merger appears to have taken another turn with the US database giant reported to be close to presenting its case.

In reports on Reuters Oracle is tipped to make a presentation on 10 December to rebut some of the competition fears that have been raised by the EU.

The investigation was kicked-off in September after the Commission and ever since a war of words has ensued with the EU competition commissioner Neelie Kroes putting the pressure on the US vendor.

Last week the EU extended the deadline for Oracle to present its side of the case moving the closing date for the investigation to 27 January.

But the signs so far have been that the European body has not been assured that competition in the database market will not be impacted so Oracle will have its work cut out when it meets the EU.
