SME focus for Kaspersky Lab

Kaspersky Lab has followed in the footsteps of several other vendors and launched a product aimed at the SME market.

The vendor's Small Office Security product follows in the wake of SME specialists such as Trend Micro and F-Secure, which have been underlining the focus on small business customers for some time.

The Kaspersky approach is to introduce a large number of automated processes to its software so that it is able to reduce the time it takes for small businesses to become protected.

In a statement, Eugene Kaspersky, co-founder and CEO of Kaspersky Lab, said the strategy to offer Small Office Security was designed to help secure the future of small businesses that are not only vulnerable to security threats but do not have the time to protect themselves.

"Small businesses are the least likely to have an IT expert on staff, and will particularly suffer from any IT-related downtime," said David Emm, senior technology consultant at Kaspersky Lab. "To date, this sector has had to choose between consumer products not designed for business use, and enterprise solutions too complex for the small business to manage."

One of the biggest challenges to small businesses has been to protect against employee error and as a result there can be a lock-down in an effort to prevent data leaking or staff accessing and sending the wrong material.

Speaking recently to MicroScope, Pat Dunne, senior director of the UK and Ireland at Websense, said it had launched a campaign called "Just say yes" to encourage businesses of all sizes to try to work with employees rather than block them.
