Tech Data and Ingram get Dell distribution in US

Dell has appointed Tech Data and Ingram Micro to handle desktops and notebooks in the US with a firm indication the partnership will be extended to other territories.

The vendor has been mulling over using distribution as a way to speed up delivery to the channel and a partnership with global players would provide the chance for a staggered roll-out across the US, then Canada before coming to Europe.

The distributors will initially have access to the pre-configured Vostro desktops and notebooks pitched at the SME market initially in America with Canada coming online later this year.

Registered and certified Dell partners will be able to use the build-to-order model to get access to a number of popular specifications directly from distribution.

Greg Davis, vice president and general manager, Dell's global commercial channels, said that it had made the appointments to improve product availability.

"These new relationships deliver further on that goal, in the process helping partners most effectively meet the needs of their customers, deliver value and grow their businesses," he said.

In the UK Dell has taken the approach of selective distribution appointing Hammer on the storage and blade side and Micro P to handle printers and consumables but has not ruled out making a move towards broadline distribution.

Expectations in the UK will now be that a similar agreement with Ingram and C2000 will be on the cards to cover this market.
