Context: Android devices dominate the tablet market

There will be more Android tablets going into Santa's sack this Christmas than iOS products as distribution gears up to support the usual seasonal demand for devices with sales already increasing across Western Europe.

The latest market analysis from Context, which gets its information directly from distributors, indicated that last month showed strong growth of sales of Android devices with more than two-thirds of products going out the door using the OS.

Growth in distribution of Android tablets last month was up by 82.2% year-on-year, which translates to around a 70.1% market share, compared with Apple's iOS holding 28.3% and Windows 8 just 1.1%.

The growth, particularly in the 7 inch segment of the market, has been helped with price drops with Samsung remaining the number one vendor with itboth the 10 and 7 inch models of its Galaxy Tab 3 doing well last month.

"The growing consumer demand for Android tablets, expected to last throughout Q4, has partly been driven by prices”, said Marie-Christine Pygott, senior analyst at Context. “Android systems were more affordable to start with but prices have been pushed down further thanks to increased competition inside the Android ecosystem leading to a greater number of devices on offer.”  

Context is expecting the demand for tablets to continue into the rest of the fourth quarter and is expecting that Apple will do well with orders in distribution for the iPad Air already racking up.
