Unitrends bolsters backup options with PHD Virtual buy

Data protection specialist Unitrends has bolstered its options by buying PHD Virtual Technologies

Data protection player Unitrends has snapped up PHD Virtual Technologies to bolster the options it has to offer SME customers and will take its global reseller base up to the 8,000 mark.

Unitrends has been building up its UK business this year, after appointing Kevin Moreau as managing director of EMEA in March, with a brief to build up sales and the channel base.

The decision to buy PHD Virtual's backup and disaster recovery will give Unitrends the chance to develop a platform that will appeal to the SME market combining DR and restore technologies.

"The small and mid-size companies that power today’s economy have significant data protection and disaster recovery needs that have largely gone unmet,” said Mike Coney, president and CEO of Unitrends.

“Unitrends and PHD Virtual, both of whom have built their businesses serving this broad market and understand its unique requirements, will join forces to develop a platform that offers the most robust data protection and disaster recovery solutions available on the market today," added Coney.

In response, James Legg, president and CEO, said that data protection and disaster recovery markets were merging and small business customers required a single solution to cover those needs.
