Dell claims VDI mobility first with Cloud Connect Android thin client

Dell Wyse is gearing up PartnerDirect resellers to make desktop virtualisation part of their mobile and managed services pitches after launching a new thin client, the Cloud Connect, which it claims is the first in its field.

The sub-£100 Cloud Connect device can be plugged into any HDMI port to convert any screen into an enterprise desktop.

Dell Cloud Client Computing director of global channel and field marketing, David Angwin said the Cloud Connect differed from other, cheaper stick-based computers because it could now form part of an enterprise managed services package.

“The concept is not just a computer on a stick, it’s a full, secure, managed device,” he said.

Based on the Android OS, it connects to peripheral accessories via Bluetooth, and back to the user’s desktop via Wyse’s Cloud Client Manager – a software-as-a-service package over which the IT department can control aspects of the experience such as app availability via Google Play, and set security policies.

Sam Routledge, solutions director at Softcat, pointed to use cases for mobile workers travelling to client meeting rooms or hotels, for example.

Cost-conscious customers such as education buyers, medical services and verticals such as retail, where space can be at a premium, were also likely targets, he suggested.

Since its 2012 acquisition by Dell, Wyse and its partners have slotted neatly into the Dell machine as part of a broader product ecosystem that has enabled resellers to have higher level conversations about desktop virtualisation, said Angwin

Routledge added that the acquisition and integration had enabled Wyse to get more airtime within Softcat.

“We like to go to market with a pre-validated stack rather than nickel and dime components, so having an end-to-end reference architecture means we can get to grips with what the customer wants,” he said.
