Cisco launches range of data centre technologies

Cisco kicks off its Partner Summit 2016 in San Diego with a smorgasbord of new data centre solutions

Cisco was playing software-defined hardball today, announcing a range of data centre solutions, designed to accelerate hybrid cloud deployments and facilitate the ‘digitisation’ of its customer-base.

At its annual Partner Summit in San Diego, which kicked off today, the networking giant launched HyperFlex, its much-anticipated take on hyperconverged. The solution combines software defined storage and data services software with Cisco’s well-established UCS compute platform.

The announcement sees Cisco re-enter the storage market, allbeit in a software-defined sense, and places it in direct competition with the likes of Nutanix and SimpliVity.

The San Francisco-based company also launched two new ‘cloud-scale’ switches. The Nexus 9200 and Nexus 9300EX series switches are the industry’s first native 25Gbps-capable devices. The additions to the portfolio are capable of delivering next generation speeds, while maintaining current day prices. Cisco claims this gives partners a two-year time to market advantage over the competition.

“Our next generation Nexus switching portfolio is built with cloud scale technology,” said Soni Jiandani, senior vice president of marketing for the Insieme Business Unit at Cisco. “We are delivering cloud scale, with an order of magnitude increase in the number of endpoints; cloud services with wire rate security and wire rate telemetry; and cloud economics, with 25G at the price of 10G and 100G at the price of 40G.”

Cisco said that the new solutions would provide channel partners with a complete end-to-end data centre portfolio.

“Cisco’s new data centre and cloud solutions will enable our partners to help their customers as they evolve to application-centric data centre infrastructure and also address the requirements for DevOps and application developers,” said Ken Trombetta, vice president, Global Partner Organisation, Cisco. “We believe this will expand the opportunity for new revenue streams and professional services for Cisco partners.”

Time to Engage

The executive team announced a series of additions and tweaks to its enablement capabilities. Cisco Engage is a suite of digital marketing services and tools designed to help channel partners engage customers and generate additional revenue.

The Cisco Marketing Velocity and the Partner Marketing Central platforms have been revamped, with the former giving partners access to best practices and thought-leadership, and the latter offering a range digital demand generation services.

“All of these new announcements equate to new opportunities for partners,” said Ken Trombetta, vice president for Cisco’s Worldwide Partner Organisation. “The digital transformation waits for no one, and we are not slowing down. “
