Anti-piracy bill backer to step down from Commons


The on-going march by the government towards introducing the digital economy bill cracking down on piracy faces yet another complication with one of the ministers charged with driving the legialsation through announcing plans to step down.

Sion Simon, the creative industries minister, is stepping down later this month in order to run as Birmingham mayor, one of the main supporters of the bill is leaving the Commons.

The Digtial Economy Bill is currently going through committee stage in the Lords with the arguments about how best to penalise pirates and protect publishers still rumbling on.

The government is planning to bring the bill, which came out of Lord Carter's Digital Britain plans, into law before the election.
