HP holds onto top position in UK services and software market

Hewlett-Packard has held onto the top position in the UK software and IT services rankings buoyed by a strong performance from its EDS subsidiary.

The other members of the top three, IBM and Capita, also held on to second and third position respectively in the preliminary tables for 2009 complied by TechMarketView.

Capgemini improved its performance, moving from sixth to fourth, but the majority of the top ten held onto their positions from 2008. The hardest hit was SAP which saw its position slip from 12 to 14 in the top 25 suppliers of software and IT services list.

The rest of the top ten compromised of Microsoft, Fujitsu, BT Global Services, CSC, Accenture and Atos Origin and Oracle.

"We expect little change in the UK Top 10 for 2009, with HP, IBM and Capita likely to retain their positions at the top of the ladder," wrote Anthony Miller, managing partner at TechMarketView, in a briefing to the analyst's subscribers.

"A superb performance from Capgemini UK at the halfway stage leads us to push them up the rankings, displacing Microsoft in 4th spot, while Atos Origin UK nudges into the top ten also with expected double-digit growth," he added.

Tech Market View expects HP to hold onto top position because of the strength of EDS in the public sector.

The top 25 players, which also includes Computacenter and Northgate, saw aggregate revenues barely move at just a 1% increase in 2009 but that represented a small decline in real terms.
