Hewlett-Packard has tightened its grip on the server market in EMEA after third quarter results showed that it was the only major vendor in the region to grow revenues in a declining market.
Total market shipments grew 5.8% during the period with more than 68,000 units sold but overall revenues fell 5.4% year-on-year to $3.9bn.
“HP was the only vendor to exhibit a double digit year-on-year growth demonstrating its dominance in the server market,” said Errol Rasit, senior research analyst at Gartner.
In unit terms HP held a 31.2% share of the market on the back of 11.4% growth – it was the only one of the top five vendors to grow shipments by double digits – and revenues rose modestly at 0.9%.
All other vendors failed to grow revenues during the three months; IBM, Sun, Dell and Fujitsu Siemens saw declines of 5.1%, 17.6%, 2.2% and 17.7% respectively.
“Effects of a weaker economy bit the server market in the third quarter of 2008 which marked the first year-on-year decline in server revenues since the second quarter of 2006,” said Rasit.
The x86 segment which accounts for the lion share of server shipments grew 7% year-on-year but RISC and Itanium Unix revenues declined 11.3% as shipments fell 20.1%.
