Consumerisation of IT hands resellers an opportunity

The latest research from IBM that has indentified a trend among customers to earmark some spending for endpoint security as workforces become increasingly mobile, backs up numerous ancedotal reports from those selling products aimed at protecting user networks.

Big Blue released the findings of its security research at its Pulse conference in Las Vegas revealing that the consumerisation of IT is already having an impact on businesses.

Already 73% of firms are allowing nontraditional enpoints, including tablets and smart phones, to connect to the corporate network but only 36% felt that these products were secure and 80% of firms are expecting more endpoints to be added this year.

As a result not far off half of those quizzed, 40%, indicated that they are going to invest in security to secure endpoints.
"The endpoint of 2011 is no longer just a PC or laptop, but the entire range of interconnected and instrumented devices and sensors that comprise the smarter planet," said Steve Robinson, general manager, IBM Security Solutions. 

Last December I was sat in a hotel conference room listening to a number of security vendors talking about this exact same issue.

It will only get more of a headache with iPad II coming out tonight and the days when firms could lockdown systems with protection around specific servers, dekstops and mobiles is slowly but surely coming to an end.

That should spell opportunities for resellers.
