Can an employee be disciplined for promotion religion, somewhat inappropriately, at work? The answer maybe an almighty - pun intended - 'yes'.
In Amachree v Wandsworth Borough Council, a council employee told a service user that had a terminal illness to put their trust in God. The user took offence, complained and the Council investigated. By way of response, the employee then issued a press statement about the Council's investigation and therefore breached confidentiality.
The employee was dismissed but subsequently claimed unfair dismissal on the basis of religion. The employment tribunal, however, found that the employee was dismissed because of misconduct, not religion, and so the dismissal was fair.
