Guiding Light

Of the UKs 2.6 million registered companies, most are unlisted or unquoted on any of the tradable equity markets. Of this number, the vast majority are under the ownership or control of the original family or are start-ups.

What does this all mean? It means that corporate governance - the processes and policies that affect the way a business is run - is very low down on the agenda or is often missing as there is no external driver for compliance.

And so, and as if by magic, the Institute of Directors and and the European Confederation of Directors' Associations have produced guidance for small business owners that offers a path to good corporate governance. It's only 45 pages long...
