Interesting practices

Ever considered that selling to public bodies and Government is like rolling a ball across an uneven table - unpredictable? Well the Office of Fair Trading announced just before Christmas that it is to hold an investigation into public procurement procedures to ensure that buyers comply with competition law.

The study aims to give practical guidance to those making purchasing decisions at all levels of government and in all types of public body on how to ensure that competition operates fairly and openly. Issues that will be looked at include payment by results and the role of SMEs in the supply process.

Unsurprisingly, whilst the aim should, if worked to properly, open markets up further, it will also help public bodies get better products and services at lower prices.

The results of the study should be available in March.
