Local difficulties could be lost in the cloud

It appears that resellers are getting concerned about Microsoft's forthcoming Office 365 cloud product and how they will fit into the company's plans. Understandable, given that everyone in the channel is trying to work out what role they will play in delivering cloud computing for vendors in the future and what it means for them.

But suggestions that a management reshuffle will somehow lead to significant revisions may well fall into the all-too familiar trap of expecting local changes to have an effect on a vendor's global strategy. In far too many cases in the past, people have rarely been able to achieve much more than some tinkering on the margins.

I suspect this could become even more of an issue in a cloud-based world where the break between the physical user and the product makes it even more tempting for vendors to roll out global strategies aligned to global provision of their products and services. We shall see.
