Microsoft $8.5bn takeover of Skype isn't Music to Google's ears

Microsoft has been in the shadow of Google for some time now when it comes to the Internet but the software giant got its own back bigtime yesterday by totally upstaging Google's announcement of its cloud streaming Music service.

Whatever press coverage there might have been of Google's Music Beta licence-free service that allows users to upload their library of music to Google's servers and stream the tracks to Android devices and computers, was all but drowned out by Microsoft's $8.5bn purchase of Skype.

That wasn't Microsoft's intention, obviously (no one in their right minds would think spending $8.5bn a good way to upstage a rival), but it definitely got everybody's attention.

It remains to be seen, beyond the publicity it generated yesterday, whether that $8.5bn proves to be money well spent.
