A recent survey from insurer Canada Life asked 1308 people - online - what they wanted most from an employer when considering a new job. Interestingly, 62 per cent would take the benefits into account when deciding whether to jump or not. In 2009, the same survey found that number to be lower at 52 per cent. Further, 49 per cent said that they'd give up part of their salary in exchange for better benefits. Only 2 per cent said that they didn't need benefits.

For employees, the most valued benefits were pension, more than 28 days holiday, income protection, redundancy benefits, life insurance, critical illness cover, health insurance and maternity cover. However, the top benefits offered by employers were pension, more than 28 days holiday, free eye tests, death in service benefits, shopping discounts, bonus, maternity cover (over statutory minimum) and a subsidised canteen. Quite a mismatch.
