Public sector still to get the cloud

While it's good to have some optimism coming from the latest survey of resellers carried out by CA Technologies there are some surprising findings in its latest Channel Index.

One of them was not so much that cloud computing is taking off, but where it is strongest is in the IT and telco sector.

It seems to indicate that the hype about the cloud has been swallowed wholesale by those who spend most of their time selling it, but there is a long way to go in other sectors.

And it was the specific case of the public sector that caused a second eyebrow to be raised.

According to resellers across EMEA adoption of the cloud has been very slow in that area of the economy. That is despite the numerous assertions from the IT industry that the technology will provide the savings and flexibility that the cash strapped civil servants are crying out for.

Harder work will have to be done convincing some of the key verticals, including retail and manufacturing, that the cloud is going to have an impact on their business.

Overall the expectation that budgets this year will rise and cloud spending will be an important driver for growth are encouraging but as the resellers are clearly telling CA Technologies there are some verticals yet to get it and vendors will have to do more to make the case in those areas.
