Who's been mis-selling domestic broadband connections?

Up to 70% of SMEs in the UK are still relying on domestic rather than business grade broadband connections, and collectively could be wasting up to £357m a month.

These claims were made by a team of researchers working on behalf of recently-rebranded business ISP TalkTalk Business, who have been chatting up SMEs across the country.

Out of those businesses using a home broadband connection, the majority said they experienced reduced productivity in the shape of lost man-hours, while others complained of varying or slow speeds.

Andy Lockwood, TalkTalk Business transformation director, said that domestic grade broadband connections "while perfectly suited for online needs at home ... [are] not designed to cope with the demands of running a business."

"It's vital, particularly in the current climate, that our research can demonstrate to smaller businesses the time and money they are losing by not upgrading to an improved business broadband connection."

TalkTalk's research highlights a certain amount of ignorance among businesses about the comms options available to them, and as the firm pointed out there is certainly a channel opportunity here.

But nevertheless we have to ask, who the hell has been selling SMEs domestic broadband connections in the first place?
