Enterprise distributor Bell Micro has warned that in spite of
massive growth in green IT policies, many businesses are struggling to demonstrate
any savings, with the median for energy saved standing at just 10%.
Researchers commissioned by Bell said there was
evidently a disconnect between the desire to go green and actual energy saving.
Of the 21% of businesses that had implemented a green IT policy, just 12% of
those reported any savings, with 4% reporting none at all, 19% saying it was
too soon to tell and 65% saying they didn’t know.
The value of green IT
therefore remains “inconclusive” according to Bell.
“These figures tell us that
green IT still has a long way to go if it is to deliver real operational
savings,” said Antony Young, Bell director of services, networking and
security.
“Resellers and vendors must
be more thorough in regards to the provision of the assessment and monitoring
services that can deliver truly green IT systems and solutions,” he added.
Encouragingly, 62% of
organisations surveyed still believed that they could make long-term savings
through green IT policies in the future.
Back in March, Bell called for greater
pressure to be put on SMEs and enterprises to implement green IT policies after
revealing numbers that showed official government legislation might be needed
in the future.
