SAP has warned that it is bracing itself for a tough 2009 revealing that it believes that licence sales will only grow slightly next year.

The vendor’s senior management has been consistently open about the impact of the downturn on its sales and the latest comments from co-CEO Leo Apotheker will add to that trend.

Apotheker told an Morgan Stanley technology conference in Spain that the vendor would be focusing on reducing costs, which has already been announced including a hiring freeze and a screwing down of travel costs.

But his comments about being prepared for all scenarios, including one with potential licence revenue decreases, has an impact on the share price and has added to growing industry concerns that next year is going to be very challenging.
