VMware last night posted healthy results for the second quarter and painted a rosy outlook for the remainder of the year.

For the three months ended 30 June the software vendor’s revenues increased 54 % to $456m compared to the second quarter 2007 (£228m) and operating profit rose from $47m to $61m (£30.6m).

It has been a “solid quarter” said Paul Maritz, president and chief executive at VMware - who replaced Dianne Greene two weeks ago - and demonstrated that virtualisation continues to resonate with customers he added.

“Much of our growth comes from customers expanding from basic server consolidation, yet increasingly more customers are seeking to virtualise their entire data centre and desktop environments [with us],” he added.

The industry was on the cusp of a major new opportunity in cloud computing Maritz added, “As customers begin to leverage VMware as both the on-ramp to the Cloud and for key elements of the Cloud itself.”

Revenues for 2008 are expected to grow between 42% to 45% year-on-year and third quarter sales are expected to range within $462m to $468m.
