Telecoms and media analyst consultancy Analysys Mason has
called for Ofcom to begin considering regulatory change as the dramatic growth
in mobile data usage is altering the nature of the mobile proposition.
As part of a study conducted for Ofcom’s ‘Mobile Sector
Assessment’ consultation, Analysys revealed that the development of new
applications based on mobile IP connectivity would offer further value in both
consumer and business environments.
Analysys Mason partner Mike Grant explained that this
changing environment was falling out of step with the UK’s regulatory
framework for mobile services.
“The current framework was established to promote
competition in infrastructure-based services that were delivered solely through
mobile communications networks,” said Grant. “With users increasingly focused
on consumption of content across multiple networks, adjustments to the
regulatory framework are likely to be required if the benefits of the emerging
trends are to be fully realised."
