Fixed wireless access (FWA) provider On-Communications and Florida-based Airspan Networks have teamed up to supply WiMAX solutions as it expands its UK network rollout.

The agreement comes following an extensive trial process, and under the terms of the deal, On-Commnications' base station deployments will now incorporate Airspan's technology, while existing networks are to be replaced with WiMAX compliant kit.

On-Communications already runs FWA networks in London, Manchester and Leeds, among other places, and has claimed to be the largest provider of its type in Britain.

On-Communications CEO Ian Roberts believed Airspan's WiMAX solutions were among the most mature on the market, adding that the ability to add services such as flexible service profiles, service classes for different types of web traffic and smart QoS for VoIP made it "an ideal platform" to support UK businesses.

"After detailed field and lab evaluations, we feel that WiMAX is truly ready for prime-time deployment," Roberts added.
