Firms ignorant of threats

21 January 2008

Almost every week surveys come out highlighting the issues that vendors want resellers to focus on with customers. Most surveys reinforce a picture of an anxious market that is dangerously ignorant of the threats posed to data.

According to research commissioned by Forensic & Compliance Systems a significant number of UK businesses are hoping they never have to face a court and reveal email evidence.

Forty-four per cent of those asked admitted they could not prove whether their email had been changed or tampered, while 35 per cent did not know whether any changes had occurred to their email.

Those results will have provided a fillip for those selling email integrity products and there was also a boost for those selling security products into the retail sector. The CyberSource UK Online Fraud Report revealed that criminals were targeting larger merchants because of the higher rewards on offer.

Some 42 per cent of large merchants surveyed said they recognised fraudsters targeting specific products that could be easily sold and 25 per cent documented fraudsters testing and exploiting ‘ceiling’ and ‘floor’ limits for transactions.

Smaller merchants appeared to be more likely to be targeted by fraudsters using card generators to try and hit lucky with the right set of numbers against the right customer.
