The economic slowdown is being used as a reason to encourage customers to invest in desktop virtualisation.

As virtualisation specialist Parallels announced bundles to simplify its desktop offering a survey by ISP Star revealed SMEs were looking at the technology because of costs.

The Star survey revealed that 21 per cent of the small businesses canvassed viewed a converged approach to technology as a “recession-beater”.

In a statement, Star CEO Ben White, said that customers were interested in technology that enabled consolidation, provided flexibility and made them more able to survive the current economic conditions.

Russell Blackburn, UK managing director at Parallels, said that it was offering resellers Quest’s Provision Networks Virtual Access Suite, which provides desktop brokering and management.

“People are deciding where to spend their money and being able to manage this centrally means there is a solution,” he said.

He added that as soon as a reseller took the solution above 250 desktops the returns for the customer were much easier to highlight.
